Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT) aims to help you recognise and understand your own and other people’s mental states, and to examine your thoughts and beliefs about yourself and others.
'Mentalisation' is the ability to think about thinking – this means examining thoughts and beliefs, and assessing whether they’re useful, realistic and based on reality. Another important part of mentalisation is to recognise that other people have their own thoughts, emotions, beliefs, wishes and needs, and your interpretation of other people's mental states may not necessarily be accurate. In addition, it is helpful to learn to be aware of the potential impact your actions have on other people's mental states. The notion of understanding other people’s intentions is a central component of MBT.
The goal of MBT is to improve your ability to recognise your own and others' mental states, learn to "step back" from your thoughts about yourself and others and examine them to see if they're valid.
At the Fitzrovia Psychology Clinic, MBT can be accessed as a one-to-one therapy option. The number of sessions you will be seen for will be discussed following the initial assessment and reviewed regularly throughout your treatment. We seek to establish successful partnerships between client and therapist in order to achieve authentic therapeutic relationships and effective outcomes.
